Lurchers.
the greyhound and whippet were crossed with the collie. If the greyhound was faster than the sheepdog, she was bred to the sheepdog, and the pups were faster sheepdogs than the parent. They might also be smarter and have more stamina than the greyhound. (This was still going on when Glyn Jones' father was raising and training Border Collies in Wales.) These mixed dogs were called lurchers, and many of them and their descendants ended up registered as Border Collies. One of the common ear types in modern Border Collies clearly comes from the greyhound or whippet.

A Lurcher/

They certainly would not breed the GH to a BC for intelligence though! LOL! I would wager that MOST Sighthounds are smarter than most BCs!

They likely did it to get a faster herder.

Miriam - one of the top obedience people (who had always had BC's and Shelties) got an Afghan a couple years ago. She has said that the Afghan is the smartest dog she has ever had. Hounds will figure out things that other dogs would never even attempt.

What does your vet say about his breed/looks? Have you looked at the AKC standards? There is a DNA test you can give him too. But does it really matter? Unless you paid for a purebred with the understanding that it WAS a purebred and you could get registration papers on him, you've got a dog that is just as good as any other dog out there.

Lurchers - the original "designer dog".

I agree, I've had both a border collie and an afghan hound, my afghan could think circles around the BC.

the lurcher is not a breed, it is a deliberate mix, and not always a border collie or greyhound.... just a sight hound x working dog.

They were not developed in Australia, they were first bred by european gypsies who wanted them for poaching rabbits.
