They circle numerous times...

They circle to "find the right spot." Many animals are picky about where they go -- we might not be able to figure out exactly what they're looking for, but THEY know!

As to speeding it up, you can't, and really shouldn't try. Would you like someone rushing you every time you need to go to the bathroom?

That said, exercise does help to move things along faster. Let him run a bit before picking his spot.

They don't do it to find the right spot or because they are picky. They do it for the same reason they circle three or four times before they lay down to sleep. Their ancestors would do it in tall grass either to make a bed or to knock the weeds down. Who wants a stick in the ass right? It is just an ancestral trait that for some reason has stuck around. And you can speed it up somewhat. You just have to train them. When my dog was young I would take her outside to a certain spot and make a certain hand motion while telling her go pee. When she would go right away would pet her and give her love and usually a treat of some sort. After awhile she learned that when I told her to pee and gave the hand gesture she was out their to pee and not mess around smelling every bush and blade of grass. Granted she doesn't just squat and pee the instant the gesture is given, but it definitely cuts down on the time she is smelling all over the yard. Usually less than 3 minutes or so.
