Someone asked me the other day about a fourth wiseman that was in the bible, who didn't make it to see Jesus on this birth night, and who didn't see Jesus himself until he was dragging his cross the day of his death. Has anyone read this in the Bible? Has anyone even heard of this?

This story comes from writer Henry van Dyke, who called his tale "The Story of the Other Wise Man". The fourth wise man or Magi was Artaban.

Artaban intends to go with the other 3 magi to search for the promised one, but keeps getting delayed by helping those less fortunate than himself.

He searches for the promised one for 33 years and ultimately dies, as he is dying he has a conversation with God, claiming to have failed in his search - the Lord replies "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me."

There is a summary of the story here : http://www.ruthriestonwestchurch.org.uk/The%20fourth%20wise%20man.htm

Actually, Candy Girl, there is no mention of the exact number of wisemen in the Bible account.
Yes, I know, we have all been taught there were three of them, probably because of the 1)gold 2)frankincense 3)and Myrhh that were given to Jesus.
I don't have a problem with this teaching, its not life or death doctrinally.
But since you asked, I encourage you to read the bible passage carefully for yourself in Luke.
By the way, while it is not crystal clear exactly how many wisemen were present, it is highly likely that there were more than a few...For security reasons, people tended to travel in caravans back then.
As far as the fourth guy who never made it...what, did he fall off his camel behind the other travelers?
Candy Girl, this is an easy thing to study out--come on now, start reading the Bible for yourself if you want to know the true accounts; people believe in santa clause and aliens, so what?
Read the Bible, find out for yourself.

The 4th Wise Man Story

USA television [perhaps NBC]

The Bible does NOT say how many Magi. It does name THREE gifts, therefore tradition says three Magi ... and even provides "traditional" names for them.

Wisemen came, seeking Jesus.
Wise men still seek Him and, seeking, find.

FOURTH WISEMAN – 72 minutes (video)

Based on Henry Van Dyke’s classic, “The Story of the Other Wiseman”. Artaban, the fourth wiseman, takes with him three precious gifts to present to the Messiah. For 33 years, Artaban and Orantes, Artaban’s servant, pursue Jesus, only to miss him at every turn. Along the way, Artaban uses his gifts to help people in dire need. He now has nothing to present to the Messiah when he finds him. The story culminates on Easter Sunday as Artaban, old and dying, finally encounters the new King, bringing peace to his final moments of life.

If no one went to see Jesus on the birth night then what witness do we have that tells that old story?
The Bible does not have the Book of Mary or the Book of Joseph his parents.

Who recorded that old story?
I have questions myself.
Wish we had some photos.

This was the plot from a TV drama called "The Fourth Wise Man," starring Martin and Charlie Sheen. It's not at all based on reality.

Peace and Merry Christmas!

" I want to share a story with you…The Fourth Wiseman. It is a legend, based on a story by Henry Van Dyke called “The Other Wiseman” and was made into a television movie starring West Wing’s Martin Sheen, Alan Arkin, their sons, and many other faces you would recognize. While there is no evidence to believe it is a factual story, it is certainly one filled with truth."
