There is no such thing, by the time you get your "free" cat spayed/neutered, get his/her shots, etc. it is pretty much always less expensive to support your local shelter or rescue. The cat rescue I work with charges $60/ adoption, the least expensive spay I could find in the city was $90, plus $20 for rabies, plus flea treatment, etc.

no such thing as a free cat. if you take a cat that's "free to a good home" you will probably have to pay for all its shots, to have it spayed /neutered, and you'll need it to have a checkup to make sure it's ok, which you'll also have to pay for. the adoption fee from the shelter or pound will often include at least some of these expenses, and the fee will be less than if you paid for all of these things yourself. Also, it's not true that all animals in shelters and pounds are sick, violent, there for behavior problems, etc. Some are, yes, but most of the animals in such places are merely misfortunate- kittens dropped at the side of the road, older cats who were adopted when they were cute and then abandoned once they grew up, or the beloved pets of people who moved and couldn't take them to their new home. I'd encourage you to check out your local humane society- the adoption fee will be between about 60 and 100 dollars, and should include (in the case of a kitten) at least their first vaccinations. My local shelter has an adoption fee of 75 dollars which covers spay/neuter, first vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, feline leukemia and FIV testing, a free initial examination from a local vet, and 10% off a purchase from the local pet store. They're losing a fair chunk of change on every cat, and run entirely off of donations- the fee you pay to adopt a cat will only offset the cost of the shelter's care for that cat, not fully cover it. They also include a free bag of kitten food.

Look on Craiglist.com. People are always posting ads for free pets and you can search near you. You can also check classifieds and look on bulletin boards in your local feed or pet stores.

check your local newspaper in the classified section. Also, check pet stores for flyers.
You can also try a pound, but most animals there are sick.
