Look in your Bible in John chapter 21. Peter and some of the other disciples have gone fishing several days after the resurrection. Jesus appears to them on the shore and calls to them. Peter, seeing him, jumps in and swims to shore.

He finds Jesus sitting by a charcoal fire. (Note that Peter was warming himself over a charcoal fire when he denied Jesus. Only two mentions of a charcoal fire in the entire Bible). Three times Jesus ask Peter if Peter loved him (Once for each denial) and twice Peter affirms it. The third time, the word translated "love" is actually a different word in the Greek. It only means to "like " or "enjoy", not the fully committed love of the early word. And Peter admits that that had been his true level of love - not the fully committed type of love. That was his repentence and where he totally committed himself to serve Jesus.

That is why Jesus goes on to tell Peter how he would in the end offer his life for Christ.

Turn to the next page of your Bible, the beginning of the book of Acts, and for the next 12 chapters you will see how Peter goes on to become one of the leaders of the early church, preaching the first Christian sermon in Acts 2, and carrying the message of Christ from Jerusalem, to Samaria and to the Gentiles.

At the end of the New Testament you will find two letters written by Peter near the end of his life that show his continued devotion and eventual death for the cause of Christ.

And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came; and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and said, "You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus." But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you mean." And he went out into the gateway. And the maid saw him, and began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them." But again he denied it. And after a little while again the bystanders said to Peter, "Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galatiansilean." But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know this man of whom you speak." And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept. (Mark 14:66-72 RSV)
...
To me, the most hopeful note here is the tears of Peter. The priests didn't weep; there is no record that Judas wept, though he did display a degree of remorse and of despair. But Peter, when he denied his Lord, threw himself down and wept. Somebody said this morning that they had learned a lesson about failure. They had learned that failure is never the end of the story. This is true of Peter. Peter's tears speak of another day that is yet to come when the Lord will deliver him and restore him, having learned a very sobering and salutary lesson."

"Another lesson Peter has learned: He has learned to read the heart the Shepherd. Once, he thought he was serving his Lord by attacking Jesus' enemies with a sword. But now be knows he has a higher calling than that of an armed warrior. He has been called to be an assistant shepherd to the Great Shepherd. He has been given the responsibility to feed the sheep of Jesus.
...
Jesus has just restored Peter as a disciple, and He has made him an apostle and a pastor, charging him with the responsibility to feed His sheep. Now He goes on to reveal to Peter just where he will have to go and what price he will have to pay to follow Jesus Christ."

Peter came back to Jesus and repented and Jesus not only forgave Him, but made him the rock on which the church of Christ was to be built. Judas had that same choice, even after betraying Jesus with the 30 pieces of silver, if he had come back and repented Jesus would have welcomed Him and forgiven him. Instead he hung himself.

Since Peter wrote two epistles and is one of the predominate figures we see in the Book of Acts .... he didn't just "disappear".
John 21 tells us the story when the Lord appeared to all of the disciples --- including Peter ---- .. In verses 15-17 Jesus asked Simon Peter did he love Him. Each time Peter responded, "Yes." There, Peter knew he was forgiven for his denials --- (something Jesus told Peter at the Last Supper that he would do).
The one disciple that didn't see Jesus at the resurrection was Judas Iscariot. He hung himself in shame after he betrayed Jesus.

Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Matthew 26 (above) (and see first link below)

John 13 and John 18 (see exerpts below) (and see second link below)
37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

38Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
