I once went to a small church, the pastor said something about speaking in toungues = edifying...what does that mean...he also made it look as though people who speak in toungues are superior and special?
this pastor seemed to not be mentally stable at one stage he referred to himself as an apostle of God, he preached in a high and sang very loudly in a high pitched voice. So why do self centered people like him speak in toungues...etc.

It's called delusion.
It's most of the time fake. Rarely it is a symptom of a mental disorder.

The way I best understand it is it's when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you start praying in the Heavenly language which is tounges, (sometimes there is an interpreter if the message is from God being spoken out in tounges (which is an awesome experience) to the people) other times it's when a believer is praying for something deeply and then they start to speak it tounges because the Holy Spirit comes upon them. It's something some people may fake but hopefully most don't. Just because some people may fake it though doesn't mean it actually happens for other, it does :)

Frankly, if you're looking for a Scriptural verification for the speaking of tongues today...there is none. The Bible said that certain gifts would be done away with after the death of the apostles. That included tongues. Besides which, the speaking of tongues was never gibberish. Rather, it involved speaking in a foreign language. Check out the story of Pentecost in 33 in the Bible. The Bible also says that speaking in tongues is useless unless it can be understood and translated.

Glossolalia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossolalia ) is a bunch of garbage. Group influenced at best, personal attention grabbers at worst.
http://www.religioustolerance.org/tongues5.htm
William Samarin wrote:
"When the full apparatus of linguistic science comes to bear on glossolalia, this turns out to be only a facade of language — although at times a very good one indeed. For when we comprehend what language is, we must conclude that no glossa, no matter how well constructed, is a specimen of human language, because it is neither internally organized nor systematically related to the world man perceives." 7
J.G. Melton 8 wrote briefly of Samarin's findings, who concluded that glossolalia is not a true language. Only a few consonants and vowels appear in it.

No it is real you must be born again to understand the things of God. I speak in tongue's and it is a gift from the Holy Spirit when you don't know what to pray you can speak in an unknown language.

when you pray to God the devil always attacks your paryers, thats why you have to pray against that as well. Speaking in tounges is a form of praise, worship, and also prayer to God. It is a form of prayer that the devil does not understand which means he cannot attack those prayers. It is a type of direct communication between you and God that only he can understand. I know it is kind of strange to people who done understand but it is a gift from God. When you recieve this gift you will start to feel it in your stomach and it will come bursting out. It is a high form of praise.

Some maybe are- some aren't. I speak in tongues and it is a gift of the Holy Spirit- It does not make me more holy or in touch with God than any one else.

They don't think they are faking. However, they are just spouting out nonsense words while on an emotional high.
It's just like guys who think they can dance and get all crazy in the heat of the moment. Nice imitation of someone dancing, but you're just doing what you think is dancing. That doesn't make it dancing.

1) Supposedly a "prayer language". Not really scriptural (in that narrow sense) - but - Pentecostals and other Charismatics think it is.
2) Yes, many are, unfortunately.
