Since it really is illegal to slip them in mailboxes (considered mail tampering), how about this:
Write "Christmas Greetings" or equivalent on the envelope. Sign them "Santa Claus" or something else appropriate and drop them off on doorsteps with a candy cane attached to the envelope. This will be especially effective if you deliver them to homes with young children - they will think that Santa himself had dropped by.

No, it wouldn't nessecarily be odd; but you could put the Christmas card in someone's mailbox that doesn't celebrate Christmas. But, then again, it could make someone's day...
I say go for it.

It's probably not a good idea to open people's mailboxes. they might think you're an identity thief. Better to see if any friends need unused cards to send out.

Yeah- opening mailboxes is a federal offense but you can tape it to the front, pin it to the post or under the flag.

Good Idea. Just dont put them in a mail box, that is against the law. Place them at the front door. You might want to sign them A friend.

I think it would be cool as long as you stated in the card that it was a random christmas greeting ...

Not weird at all! This is the season to spread joy and cheer, and that would be a great way to spread Christmas spirit around your neighborhood! Just be careful that you do not offend those who do not celebrate Christmas!
Merry Christmas!!!

I think that a nice idea, but in a way its quite creepy. I'd be both happy and scared at the same time... So I'm undecided.
Is it really illegal?

Sweet thought, but illegal. You cannot put mail in someone else's mail box.
