They were treated worse than slaves. At least the slaves of the old south had value and were fed, housed and clothed by their masters to protect their investment. The Irish were paid the lowest wages, did the dirtiest work, were charged exorbitant prices at the company stores, and thrown out of the company housing in the dead of winter by the likes of the Andrew Carnegie and Mellon and Vanderbilt etc. .

First was leaving home for the new world abandining all that they knew to go too a land of uncertainty,the second was on how much booze do they allow a person to carry on the boat and where is the closest pub when you get off it.
