I'm curious why you say your mom is not a good mom, but I'll not dig.
What makes a good parent? First a parent who is a parent first, and friend and buddy later. One who sets distinct rules and guidelines, and upholds those. One who knows when the rles can be bent and broken. One who spends time with their kids, loves and hugs them, lavishes affection as well as gives direction.
One who teaches a child how to do things - from putting glitter on a paper to make a pretty decoration to learning how to keep a budget. Who allows their child the freedom to explore- at any age - while providing that safe haven for them to come home to. One who accepts their children for what they are, regardless of what color they dye their hair or what sexual orientation they decide to be - or what religion.
One who puts their child's wellbeing first - and that includes getting on their case when the bad report card comes home, making them eat veggies and wear a coat outside when its 10 degrees.
One who explains why things are as they are - including explaining why the disipline is happening. One who talks to the child, but is also willing ot share of themselves and their childhood memories. One who most importantly actually listens to the child. One who admits when they've made mistakes- to the child.
A person who is reliable, steady and does their best to love and care for that child -that's what makes a good parent.

Dear Amy, First of all we all make mistakes when trying to raise our kids. There is so much to learn in raising a family..The only advice I can give you is take one day at a time and give your baby more of you than material things. Don't be afraid to discipline. Children need boundaries. Raise your kids up knowing the Lord and his goodness. Teach your children to pray..only if one or two words at first.. teach them to be thankful.

Good parenting starts with not aborting your child, then not making the mistakes your parents made. Monkey see monkey do, get it? Someone needs to break this generational course of abuse. Stop whoring around in front of your child, try to stop whoring around all together, it's only the man that gets something out of it anyway. Stop the drinking, stop the drugs. Speaking lovingly to your child when he/she needs to be taught. Don't put your 3 year old kid in the dryer because he pissed his bed. It will only make him piss there all the more. People today lack common-sense. They need to take pills because they are too easily offended. A child needs a mother and father. A kid around two women all the time is not going to grow up masculine. He'll be a pansy.

Love, patience, respect, knowing when to set limits, and being active is a good start to being a good mom.

Each day of parenting is different. Each day you will have to make decisions for your child. So each day you will have to have the strength to so what is right so you will be a good example to your child.

Treating your child with the same respect you would want to be treated with.
This doesn't mean you can't give up your role as adult and teacher...just do it with respect.
