Depending on the weather, its been wierd these past few years (one day its in the 50's the next day near 0). But if your use to Florida weather in winter you might be cold in 50 degree weather. My advice would be to layer. If your cold put another layer on. If you get hot take a layer off. If it gets real cold wear long underwear. Oh and don't forget about gloves and a hat. Don't care about looking good, go for warmth. I hate these girls and women who walk outside in 0 degree weather wearing a skirt that is up to their *** just to look good. LAYER

Layering is the key. The weather is changeable & can be warm or really cold. One medium heavy parka; gloves; something warm to cover your head. Jeans for the bottom.

The main NYC advice: The problem with NYC in the winter is not cold -- but water. It rains or it snows & the snow melts in a day or so causing deep cold puddles. So: Do not wear canvas sneakers. Leather only. High top shoes are better. Carry a change of socks. Wet socks are awful cold. Look where you're going. Walk where everyone else is walking. NYC has lots of potholes on sidewalks & in streets. What looks like a little puddle might conceal a 6" deep hole. Keep your feet dry & the rest of you will enjoy your trip.

Since you're not going up into New England, a good winter coat of medium weight (like a nice heavy wool trench or pea-coat), a pair of gloves with some kind of lining (isotoners shold be fine, if not quite stylish), a scarf and a hat. Bring a sweater in case you get cool indoors. The ability to layer is a key in the north--let me give you an example. I'm in NJ. Today (12/15) is is 61 degrees. Two days ago it was 34 degrees. Other than that, your regular clothes should do just fine, assuming your entire wardrobe does not consist of bermuda shorts. LOL.

Depending where in NY you are going, you may want to get thermal underwear.

Definitely have gloves, jacket, hat (Beanie would be better), and pants. For NY use the thermal underwear for NC, MC, and DC use the gloves, jacket, and pants. If you have boots, bring those for NY too, to help keep you warm. If you need anything for warmth, don't hesitate to go buy something (You don't need a $300 North Face Jacket or $150 Gore-Tex Boots, you can be reasonable and warm).

Most important thing to do: Have fun...

For NC, it will depend to some extent on what part of the state you are visiting. Though it gets to be more wintry in late January and February, it can be pretty cold in the mountains now. The temps will be more moderate the further east you are, but I heard today they think it may be cold in the central part of the state around Christmas.
For more specifics, click on "weather" on the Yahoo home page. You can enter ZIPs or cities to get local forecasts (up to 10 days) before you leave. (Or click below.)
Weather can be unpredictable (yeah, I know that's obvious). We took warm clothes to NYC over Thanksgiving and it got up to about 70 degrees. I think that packing layers is generally the best bet.
Enjoy your trip. You will find things to enjoy and a lot of friendly people in each place.

2 knit hats (1 light colored, 1 dark colored), 1 set warm gloves, 1 warm coat, 1 light jacket (to wear over a warmer outfit), 1 or 2 sets long underwear (long johns),1 boots with tread, 1 shoes/sneakers/kicks with tread, 2 pair wool boot socks or cold weather hiking socks, Chapstick, sunglasses, light sunscreen, 2 jeans loose enough to wear with long johns, 1 or 2 sweaters, 1 or 2 sweatshirts. This should cover you for two weeks added to any other clothes/shoes you like to wear. If only going one week Cut numbers where you like but have at least one from each type of article (hat, coat, glove, treads, jeans, longjohns, chapstick, sunscreen, sunglasses, sweater, wool/hiking socks) Have fun and good luck. P.S. Check how much your companions are wearing for activity and weather that day and adjust to your pref's. "Layer" and don't wear everything you own at once!!

The media particular does make this sound like a typhoon spawned in hell yet there are a good type of conservatives contained in the factors the position that typhoon is hitting too so it rains on the best and the undesirable.

For NY, you'll need a bullet-proof vest. For MD and NC, just to fit in you'll probably need to denim vests with rough edges plastered with NASCAR logos and confederate flag emblems. NC is pretty nice.
