Ask to meet the sire and dam
Ask if the puppies have been health checked and ask for the vets number to use as a reference.
Ask if they come with a health guarantee
Make sure they come with a spay/neuter contract
Ask if they do heath tests
Ask if they show and if the parents have their championship
Make sure the puppy is not younger than 8 weeks old

Hi the Golden Retriever is quite a popular breed, maybe with more research you can find a breeder near your home? But I think they can be trusted since they proposed you meet halfway at the vet, and after you've asked them the following questions: 1) Can I see a picture of the parents? This will give you an indication of the size and appearance the puppy will have when it grows up. Asking about the parents behaviour will also indicate how the dog you'll get will be (ie, friendly? loud? aggressive to other dogs? etc.). Ask as well if there has been a case of hereditary problems in your future dog's lineage. 2)Ask for the details of the puppy's vet treatments. The puppies are vaccinated before they leave the kennel. You can ask the owners to give you a full report that you could check with your local vet. 3)Are the puppies familiar with everyday life situations? This is very important, as it will prevent the puppies to be scared by unfamiliar things. You should ask the kennel if the puppy has experienced things such as a vacuum cleaner, the sound of radio or television, have they been in contact with children? With people of different racial backgrounds? Have they seen other animals? Of course it is better if they have, but if not, you can still make sure you show your puppy all theses things as soon as you get him. You can also ask where they are kept, like this you will know a bit better how the place is. You could even ask for a picture of that. 4)When will I be able to get the puppy? Puppies are not able to leaver their mom's before 8 weeks, so make sure you get your puppy when it's at that age or older. Good luck :)

Ask about the health of the parents, that's the big thing. Do your research before you go to buy so you don't need to ask any breed specific questions.
Breeding to the standard isn't all that important if you want a pet. By that I mean the size mostly, and coloration I guess. A lot of breeders are breeding smaller yorkies, and they're desired by many dispite the fact that they will have more health problems.
And as a note I need to add every time I read answers that don't so much answer the question as insult the asker for not knowing the answers, if you're asking, you must care, which means you're not the bad guy and you're looking to get a quality pet. Some people just need to shuttup *cou-tyke-gh* and answer what is ask.

First of all if you are buying a puppy to give as a gift, it isn't recommended that a pet is ever given as a gift unless the individual has asked for one and you are sure that they really want one and will be a good provider.

You should know as much as possible about the breed you are planning on getting, the questions will then be obvious to you when you go see the breeder.

I have provided a website that tells all about the Yorkie breed.
Good Luck!

Make sure they aren't running a puppy mill. Ask about the parents medical history, how long they have had the parents, shots, wormer, basically if they are vet checked (hip x-rays). Check out the area that the puppies have been housed in make sure its clean. Check the ears and gums of the puppy a nice light pink is a good sign for a healthy puppy. And make sure its playful and energetic not sleepy and lazy that could be a sign of worms or worse. Then enjoy your puppy!

Ask them if they'll sell you a puppy for Christmas. The correct answer is "NO!"

A GOOD breeder won't sell a pup "for Christmas". Automatically avoid any that will.

If you come across a breeder who will make you wait until the holidays are over to get your pup, that's a good thing.

Also ask to see the pedigree of the parents. If you see that the parents have champions in their background, then you have a better chance at a quality pup.
I learned this one the hard way. I bought a pup from a breeder. I got all the AKC paperwork on the pup. Months later I got the pedigree on my pup. The parents were brother and sister.

Some things to know is what you relate from the puppy. It should look away from you when you look at it in the eye as you hold it up. It should be frisky; biting is natural because it has its baby teeth and this will go on...We relied on the runt of the litter because usually they are the hardest to place and they remain small.
Focus more on playing, walking, training to go out; commands and who is alpha dog...
Read training books and go with the one you are comfortable with for techniques.
Love my always a puppy dog

yorkies are hard to handle, be prepared to have to carry it around with you alllll the time, its really like a baby!! not kidding, so make sure thats the type of dog you actually want!!! but ask how old, of course, the mother and father(look at them), check out the living quarters...make sure the breeders have the papers on the dog, vet doc's etc.....good luck!! happy holidays!!!

you should ask if they have had their shots. thid id the most important question you should ask, because if not you have to take care of that. if you don't ask , then you put your dog at risk when it gets sick and you don't know what to do. If the dog has had all of its puppy shots then ask for a record of them. that way, if you need to get additional shots, you know what shots they have already had. it helps keep the dog safe and healthy.
