"Foundation" is a term from the building trade whereby the base of a building has to be solid and unlikely to be affected by subsidence.
To translate this into relationship terminology........the foundation would refer to the two of you being solid together and sharing common interests, emotions and plans. All the things that make your relationship fun, exciting and rewarding.

Foundation in a relationship refers to the base on which something is formed or supported - It is normally associated with qualities / characteristics.
It can consist of a single element or multiple elements such as shared values/beliefs (spiritual), support from family and/or friends, trust, love (emotional), money provided for maintanace or necessities (financial), appearance (physical).
Life as well as relationships will never be perfect however it will be easier to handle life's storms if you have a good foundation. A good foundation does not guarantee that the relationship will not suffer bruises but it will ensure it does not disintegrate and sink at the first sign of trouble. However, keep in mind that when the main supporting element is removed then the whole relationship will break-up.
Without a good foundation (characteristics) it is like building sand castles (relationships) too close to the sea (life) - It's impossible to sustain.

A foundation has to do with having strong morals and being strong and confident in who you are and knowing that you have what it takes to make it through anything in a relationship. Knowing that you both are emotionally, mentally, and spiritually safe with one another is having a solid foundation to build on.
Trusting that inner voice is very important when it comes to a foundation.

It means the substances to the relationship/is it just superficial(what they look like, sex and money). These things come and go.
The foundations strength also depends on how long you have been together.
Do you make plans and have goals for the relationship?
