Might I suggest "Avast!", It is a free antivirus that is VERY good. It also works on 98 & XP.
There is a free "trial", however there is NO charge for registration FOR HOME USE; this simply gives you a "registration number".
By registering, and correctly setting the options, it will update automatically, at least once DAILY.
I use different antivirus on different machines on the same LAN, (until I find out which is best for my uses), and I have found this to be the best overall for MOST general uses, since it has "real time" scanning, both incoming and outgoing. (that keeps you from accidentaly sending a virus!)

Antivir has a Windows 98/ME version:

It is freeware, and their registration doesn't send you spam and other junk like some other freeware programs.
