If it's a boy, get those neat little things you put in the toilet for him to aim at. Of course, I think grown men would have fun with that too, and it would help with the mess ;)
For my daughter I waited until she was ready, it made for a less stressful and easier transition to the potty. She loved Bear in the Big Blue House: Potty Time With Bear. Try a sticker book, and give lots of praise.
If your child is older (After 3 1/2) and NEEDS to be potty trained, set aside a weekend and leave off pants and diaper. Every 30-45 minutes take him/her to the bathroom to see if they have to go. If they start peeing, run them into the bathroom. It's messy, but it usually works in that one weekend.
Make sure you have pull ups so that they can get used to putting on underwear, and make a big deal about how big they're getting.
My best advice is to just watch your child and do it when the time is right for them. I see so many people asking "How do I potty-train my 18-month-old". My answer: Don't. They're not ready for it yet. Good luck, and I hope this helped!

When I potty trained my oldest I bought him a potty seat (one that sat on the floor). I tried the whole PullUps thing, that didn't work. He just used them like diapers (same with my 2nd child). So then I read somewhere to just put underwear on them all the time. So that's what we did. Put underwear on him during the day and at night a PullUp. If we were going to be away from home for a long time I would put the PullUp on him. But I would also constantly ask him if he had to go. Finally after about a week he got it. I didn't worry about teaching him to stand up at first. After a few months of him sitting on the potty and going that way, then I asked him if he wanted to go potty like Daddy and stand up. I did the same with my second son. But be aware that at first they may not like to go #2 in the potty, they don't like it for whatever reason. Now my third son, (who is 2 1/2 yrs. old) keeps going into our bathroom and takes off his diaper and sits on the BIG potty. We bought him underwear for when he is ready. Good Luck.

When I potty trained my child, I went to the dollar store bought some toys & books. I wrapped them up in newspaper put them in a bag and everytime my child went potty I gave her a toy. I bought twelve toys and by the time she opened them all, potty training was done. She would use the potty from that point on.

take the child to the bathroom often every 30mins and everytime you have to go ask them if they have to go and place them on the potty every other trip even if they say they dont. Dont make them stay there if they want to get up let them. Have them wear underwear. Pullups are great for naps and bedtime but i found useless the ones that change colors or the "wetness liner" so they can feel it did nothing for my daughter. If they have an accident" in their underwear take them to the potty if it is BM put the bm in the toliet with them watching you and say this is where we do this. They will get the hang of it dont stress out to much. * there will be weeks that they go constantly and then for some reason theyll have accidents like crazy but dont get to upset theyll get the hang of it.

When I was trained and trained my kids-one trained pdq, other remained untrained until age four. The difference in training was ??? I really think it was her attitude and stubborness. I put regular underwear on both and took them at intervals; same age began training-two years plus months (2 1/2); one was a girl, the other the boy; girl older, boy youngest...I spent a weekend training the boy. I spent years getting the idea into the oldest head what to do...They say spend a weekend and use regular underwear; if they pee it-put on another pair. They do not like being wet? Good Luck

What I did with both my girls was to allow them to see me use the bathroom (gross, I know, but bear with me). Then I bought a potty and allowed them to be around the house without a diaper. This is ideal if you have hardwood floors...carpets can get icky. eventually they will want to emulate you and sit on it, even if they don't use if for potty-ing at first.
Whatever you do, don't force it. That will just prolong the process.

First make sure they are ready!
Take them to walmart and buy a pack of underware, let them choose and explain that big kids wear underware and not diapers etc.
Let them just wear the underware, and take them to the toilet every hour to establish a rountine, even if they don't "go" make a big deal, do dance, clap, sticker whatever.
For boys you can use cherrios to establish aim.
After a few days/weeks they will start to go by them selves.

WHEN I STARRTED POTTY TRAINING MY SON I TRIED EVERYTHING AND HE WOULD STILL WET HIS PANTS. MY SON LIKES BOB THE BUILDER SO I WENT TO WALMART AND BOUGHT BOB UNDERWARE AND RUBBER PANTS TO GO OVER THEM FOR WHEN WE GO OUT. THEY HAVE A LITTLE BOB ON THE FRONT SO WHEN I PUT THEM ON HIM I TOLD HIM THAT HE HAD TO KEEP BOB DRY AND TO TELL MOMMY IF HE HAD TO GO POTTY SO BOB WOULD NOT GET WET. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. I WOULD MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF WHEN HE WENT POTTY SO HE SAW I WAS HAPPY. GOOD LUCK
