I'd suggest you try some Belgian beers. They make both top and bottom fermented beers so some are light in style, but not gassy like British brewed commercial lager, and some are dark and warming. Most pubs nowadays sell at least one variety of Leffe, the best known beer from Brugge. Some (The Ship & Mitre or The Fly in the Loaf - both in Liverpool if you're in the district!) have a huge range, both in bottles or on draught. If you like the idea of finding a pub to try these different styles, there is a website called "beerintheevening" where you'll find loads of great information.

Happy drinking!

You pose an interesting question. My advice to you is to mix things up. You don't seem to have that much experience with drinking and you mentioned you stop at the pub on your way home from work. If that means you're driving, I'd advise you stay away from anything too strong. Save the martinis for at home drinking or when you have someone else who is sober to do the driving.

It's my experience that it's hard to get good wine in a pub, so I won't go there.

Have you tried wheat beer? It's one of my favorite beer varieties and it's more flavorful than you're everyday lager. Slight flavors of citrus and corriander. Also, you can usually get one for not much more money than you'd pay for a lager. Blue Moon is one that's produced in America and is pretty good for an American beer. Hoegaarden is a european Belgian Style Wheat Beer that has to be tasted to be believed.

So...yeah. Try wheat beer.

Try drinking proper beer rather than lager. If you are bored with lager it indicates you are growing up.
