Why is it that so many of you talk about the cross some Christians wear when you have things such at the CTR ring or the Joseph Smith ring that are worn by so many of you?

straightup - don't give me that stuff. I lived in Utah (4 different towns, for about a decade), married into a Mormon family, have had several Mormons friends.
Do you know how many times I've heard "If your father was killed by a gun, would you wear it around your neck?"

I'm sorry, I lived my whole life up to age 26 in Utah and never heard ....."If your father was killed by a gun, would you wear it around your neck?" But, I would say that is a bad analogy. The others said it plainly though, if you are familiar enough with the church than you would know that although we believe in the Crucifixion, it is only part of what Jesus did. And we choose not to use that symbol of pain and death. in fact you could say there is no one main symbol for our faith unless it's an outline of angel Moroni or the SLC temple. CTR rings are mostly for kids as a subtle reminder to "Choose The Right", and they are really cheap plastic. you can get one more expensive and elaborate, but most don't. and it is true that it is totally run commercially, the church is not involved one way or the other.

Negativity everywhere!!!
Honestly, I don't think any Morman has, or should have, a problem with someone else wearing a cross. That is their prerogative. We respect what took place on the cross as much as the next guy, it's just that we don't use the symbol at the center of our faith. Rather than the death we focus on the resurrection. As to the CTR or JS (which I've never seen and think is rather cheesy) rings, it is close to being the same as the cross for many non-mormons, a reminder that we must live our lives as Jesus. So I see your point, a little. But what we're usually talking about with the cross is not in referrence to it being used as a reminder, but as a symbol of faith. The rings are not this.

Wow, I didn't know anyone made any rings like that. They're just commercial products, though. Personally I don't wear any rings anyway. I guess I still have my old CTR ring from age 8 packed away somewhere in the closet. You know, I really like the song Cristy Lane sings called "The Old Rugged Cross." I don't particularly have any feelings one way or another about people who wear crosses. I am mystified by movies which show people using crosses to ward off evil, however, since they are inanimate objects. Have a happy day, and I send you two gummy bears.

Great Question -
For a good understanding about how both Mormons and Christians view the cross, see the below link and look at the May 23, 2006 episode. You can watch the show or just look at the notes on PDF. Way too much info to post here.
This is a show about Mormon and Christian Beliefs, it's not anti-mormon at all. Check out the whole website and see what it's about. I think it helps explain Mormon vs Christian beliefs on many topics - all done in love.
Hope this help!

What do you mean why do we "talk about the cross"...If a person wants to wear a cross - what's stopping them? Just because WE don't wear a cross, it seems like people think we don't think the crucifixition was important. I believe Christ suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane, not on the cross...eventhough of course the crucifixtion was important.
It seems like we are ridiculed either way...so whatever.
For me, I just don't understand why a symbol of pain and death is displayed in such a way...but, that's just me. I know some people say "so you don't forget what he did" or to remind you to be good or whatever...I just don't understand. But, just because I personally don't understand it doesn't mean it's wrong either.
It's like garments. People don't understand why we wear them, so of course others think it is stupid or mysterious...and of course "wrong" or "weird."
To each their own, right?

You will want to find out more about what a double standard is. The question you ask is an example of the same in the Mormon church.

The Church of Latter Day Saints has no official doctrine against the cross. Further, the CLDS considers themselves to be Christian.

Here is the reason:
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

It's called hypocrisy. And why do so few Mormons want to know about the history of this church?
