Make the scene safe, and then rescue. Remember their emergency is not your emergency. You were called to bring order to chaos, not create more chaos. You cannot do any good if you're a victim yourself.

I agree one dead rescuer is no good to anyone. Has the gas leak been reported to the gas company? Where are they/why haven't they shut off the gas? Call again, who know maybe they never got a call about a leak. Next, how long can victim wait to be rescued? What is their condition? Is it life threatening? If so get them out now.

Do not put your life in unnecessary danger. As the first person said --- a dead rescuer is no use to anyone. If you have a backup air supply to take with you or if the outside air is accessable to be breathed , then it is your call if you want to go. It is very dangerous. As far as the gas company being the only ones able to turn th gass off, this is normally the case, but in extremem emergency, I would turn it off if I had the ability , gas company or not.

Do you have some form of air supply? If not, I agree with those who stated the first rule of rescue. Don't become a victim. If you can't safely perform the rescue, you should not do so.
