Since the word vulgar means "common" all the words in this answer are vulgar. To cuss in church, or anywhere, is disrespectful to others. If you do not respect yourself, you will never be able to respect others. Merry Christmas. Swearing just for "shock value" is so two year old.

I have questioned the basis for this "rule" as well. The best answer I have come up with is that it offends some people. I think the real question is, why are these words considered considered bad when other euphemisms such as dang, fudge, and shoot are not. I think that we have lost track of what it means to stay away from unclean words by putting the emphasis on what words are said and not on what the meaning is behind what you say.

I would say not to cuss any where but many see church as a holy place every where is the same to God.

Once about two years ago, I was sitting next to an old couple in church while listening to the sermon. I accidentally muttered "That is so ******* stupid." They both looked at me and scooted down the pew. It's pretty hilarious now, but I felt bad then.
