If you are using a box, it makes 2 cakes. So you use two of the same size pans and bake the cakes. Let cool completely on cooling racks gently use your fingers to brush off any crumbs. Then place the first layer UPSIDE down always. Then you put down a thick layer of frosting and then put the other cake on top RIGHTSIDE up. Then you frost the sides and you frost the top last. If you are using different sizes for the layers, frost each layer completely before adding the next layer (example: wedding cake with layers that are small at the top and larger at the bottom)

make two of the same size cakes. Remeber to let them cool of before putting on frosting or it won't stay no matter how much icing you put on it. Then put the frosting, in the middle and then on the sides of the cake.

use two 8" or 9" round cake pans and divide the batter into equal parts then when cooked put one upside down and then whatever you want to put on the middle and then the bottom of the other one on top make sure that the rounded part is the top of the cake, if you want on the bottom one just level the top of the bottom one out first beffore placing it on your serving dish

the easiest way is to actually bake two cakes of equal size (two round pans is common), then top one with frosting and put the other on top. The frosting is like glue in the middle.
