I am applying for many teaching jobs (maybe up to 20)
should I ask for digital or hard copy copies of my references from my professors? Is it appropriate to ask for them in a digital format?

It's okay to ask for them in digital, because most companies use online processes at this point. Your professor will totally understand. If the professor doesn't want to give you a word doc because it could be altered, ask to help them convert it to pdf. Make sure you still get the signed hard copy!

I'm assuming you have a good relationship with the people who are recommending you, so you shouls explain that you are applying to multiple positions and ask what they suggest. They will likely give you an electronic copy or perhaps multiple hard copies so you will have enough for all of your applications
