Lung Cancer can be caused from second-hand smoke alone having not even smoked at all. It can be caused by many other things as well other than smoking. Smoking only increases your risk of getting lung cancer. This increase begins as soon as you inhale smoke, whether first-hand or second-hand. The more you are exposed to smoke, the greater increase of the risk. However, I have known people who have smoked for 30 years and never had any case of lung cancer at all. So, while smoking is not good for you nor those around you, it can't be said you now have a 100% chance of getting lung cancer but the chances probably are much greater than if you had not smoked.

I believe that some people are more susceptible than others. There is no way of knowing how many years because it will be different for everyone. Some people can smoke for 50 years and never develop lung cancer and some people can smoke for 10 years and get it. Best to never start or quit now if you smoke. I did, best thing I ever did.
