The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:
1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an
The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.
"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]
The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.
2. Pork prohibited in the Bible
The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus
"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".
"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]
Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy
"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]
A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.
3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases
The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.
Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.
4. Pork has fat building material
Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.
5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth
The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.
Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.
6. Pig is the most shameless animal
The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common in the affluent circles of Bombay.

If you check out the old testament you will see the pig is considered to be an unclean animal. This is also the view taken by many other religions including islam. As the pig acts as host for the tape worm to be passed to humans is was in fact a good reason not to eat pork. Like I said, if you check the old testament you will find out which animals should and should not be eaten. Those with a full hoof are considered clean and those with a split hoof such as the pig are considered unclean. As I am buddhist and veggie it doesnt affect me but it doesnt hurt to know and understand about other faiths

Muslims have been commanded to eat only particular types of meat.
Forbidden ones include,
1. Caracass of a dead animal
2. Blood
3. Pork or any pig-based products
4. Animals slaughtered in the name of anyone but God
5. Fanged beasts of prey
no one's got this right other than Westside..
zaidi..any references ???
Health reasons include the fact that pigs graze around in the filthiest of places and eat anything and everything they lay their noses on.

The myth is that the pigs went against the orders of Moses to abstain from reproductive process while in his salvation ship. Another myth is that the pigs cannot look upwards, ie.,towards the seat of God. But the truth can be this: At the time of emergence of Islam sanitary facilities were very poor . The modern type latrines were not heard of. People used to deficate in open places under the cover of some bushes. Pigs are the lot who prey on human excretions also. And they were the main carriers of the worms like round worms and tape worms. It was unsafe to eat pork which was not properly boiled. And pork was one of the popular most meat available at that time. To reduce the risk on health some measures were to be taken. Instead of telling people to avoid pork eating for the sake of keeping their good health, it was made a religious prohibition. As we say, ".....swaloow it with a pinch of salt" it was easy to make people obey something with a tint of religion in it.

Like most of the dietary proscriptions of the Hebrews, this was given for a solid reason.
Trinchinossis is a parasitic worm that infests certain animals and can be passed on through ingestion of the flesh. It's a nasty little s.o.b. and only proper cooking can kill it. Proper cooking is not possible with the fire-making skills they possessed, ergo the worm lived and you got it. Only possible solution, don't eat the meat that carries the worm. Since pork is the most frequent carrier and these people weren't dumb, merely technologically challenged, they proscribed the eating of pork.
Mohammed cribbed a lot of stuff from the Torah and he included this proscription.
Thanks to today's food-handling technology, trichinossis is no longer a problem. If animal fats are consumed with moderation, there's no real reason (other than taste or allergy) not to eat pork anymore.

Islam considers human as the most superior of all creations and values their lifestyles.
So animals are divided into two groups. Halal (Can be eaten) and Haram (Cannot be eaten). Some of the conditions for judging Haram animals are as follow.
1) The animal eating all kinds of muck or dirt.
(e.g. Dog, Pig, Cat, Mouse, Crow etc.)
2) If Halal animal like cow or chicken starts eating dirt then that particular animal should not be eaten anymore unless that particular animal is kept in a clean place for about two or three months.
3) All the birds that are primarily using its talons for prey.
(e.g. Eagle, Falcon, etc.)
4) All the demon (blood drinking) animals that can attack human.
(e.g. Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Shark, Vulture etc.)
5) All animals that are made of God's curse.
(e.g. Elephant, Monkey, Rabbit, etc.) They all were human before god converted them into animals because of not obeying God. See books like Quran, Bible for whole story in detail.
6) All earth crawling creatures including reptiles, insects etc.
(This is because they contain viruses of different kinds)
7) All the animals that have feed on Pig's or any other Haram animal's milk. This also includes their babies.
8) All the animals with which man has conducted sexual acts. Such animals should be burn after killing including their babies.
9) Hunted animal that dies before the man (Hunter) has actually reached it.
10) All the types of fishes that dont have scales around their body.
These are the types of animals that are not allowed to be eaten.

And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
Leviticus 11:7-8
This law applies to Jews, Christians and Muslims. The chapter and verse in Leviticus clearly states why pork is classed as an unclean meat.
In school, I had to dissect a pig feteous for biology, although I am a Judeau-Christian. Biologically, the swine is very similiar to us, except of course they are classed as a lower species.
Humans, in cannabalistic cultures are referred to as 'long pigs', it is not a very nice example, but I have used it to express why the eating of pork is classed as unclean.
I refuse to eat pork, or touch it, if possible. My husband eats pork, which makes me cringe, and I have to prepare a pork roast for him, which I am not looking forward to.
I am doing lamb, which will be done in a seperate oven. I refuse to cook them together in the same oven. My husband like majority of Christians doesn't see, or know how closely related biologically to swine we are.
Also, further on in the new testament, demons went into swine and died after Jesus cured a possessed man.
Think of the pig like us; except on four legs, that in itself is enough to put anybody off eating it.
I hope this helps

Islam isn't a clean faith. it incredibly is however the sum and substance of the Torah and the Gospel. the two Torah and Gospel prohibits eating of pork ; 'do no longer eat the beef of pigs or maybe touch their carcasses, it incredibly is unclean to you' (Bible). although collectively as the Jews nevertheless adhere to this regulation however the Christians replaced this regulation of OT, giving it their very own interpretation in accordance to their desires and started eating pork. on condition that Islam follows the regulation of God strictly, actual muslims do no longer eat something that eats its very own ****. So the Q, 'would desire to there be this type of element as Halal pork, ham etc?' is dumb.

blood and the flesh of the swine and that
which hath been invoked the name other than
Allah. "

"
Forbidden to you is that which dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that on which any other name than that of God has been invoked, and the strangled and that beaten to death, and that killed by a fall and that killed by being smitten with the horn, and that which wild beasts have eaten, except what you slaughter, and what is sacrificed on stones set up and that you divide by the arrows; that is a transgression. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of your religion, so fear them not, and fear Me. This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion; but whoever is compelled by hunger, not inclining willfully to sin, then surely God is Forgiving, Merciful.
" Al-Maidah ayat 3
God knows on what we should and shouldn't eat along with their reasons, we only can speculate on why God allowed some and prohibited some.
