Are you kidding? $20 is great.

It would cost you more than $20 to take a single item to the "dump" or transfer station. Add up all the big items he has taken and give him $10 per item. Next, add up all the big packages your mail person brought you and give them a tip also. Don't forget the bagger at the grocery store when you bought that large turkey with all the trimmings.

Trash guys make decent money, and if you pay for trash directly, then that's kind of an insulting amount. However, if it is paid through your town, it is more acceptable. Also, get him $20 to a coffee place or something instead. It shows you put some effort, and I'm sure he'll be thankful for a few free coffees on a cold morning.

I think that's fine- since most people don't tip the trash collecters at all, even though they are deserving. Just make sure it's the guy you actually want to tip- since some people take off during the holidays- you wouldn't want the tip to go to the substitute guy.

Not at all! That's VERY generous of you and I'm sure he will greatly appreciate both the gift and the recognition. I don't see my trash guys, but I tip my mailman $20 and he loves it. Go for it!

having been a trash man in flagler beach florida, i can say that your gift would be greatly appreciated. when we received tips last year, we pooled them and split them according to how long each person was on the job. a customary gift here was $10.00. more if the household had any unusually large pick ups during the year. such as carpeting or furniture. also if it is the same people who pick up your recycling and property vegetation it would be customary to add to the tip.
happy holidays.
p.s.
add a six pack of coke to that and help them along on their day :)

They make more than me and I don't throw out large items, so I don't tip them. But if you tip $20 that's fine bc it will buy them a nice lunch somewhere. :)

I think that is wonderful and I'm sure he appreciates it! Trash collectors really have a hard job, and I'm sure most of their customers don't tip at all. I don't think it's insulting...I think it's thoughtful and generous!

Is there not more than one? If so, consider them.
The amount should never be insulting, but what of others? Maye a small amount, or even cookies.
