I have actually seen a few pictures of a woman who got a butterfly tattooed down there and then pierced her labia to create the body. It was very beautiful.
As with any tattoo, it really depends on the image that is being placed on their body to determine its beauty and most importantly, whether the person who is getting it done enjoys it.
Who cares if strangers think it is ugly? So long as your wife loves it (and has your support as your face will be down there), that is all that matters.
First though, I would have her try temp tattoos to see if that location is where she really wants it. That would be a lot of pain to go through and not worth it because she didn't like it.

I was dating a girl for a while that had a tattoo of a cobra just above here (down their) and for some reason it was a big turn off for me, Her boyfriend from way back had her do it , Personally a tattoo on a woman in certain places (butte, close to her vagina are inner thigh makes me think of some one who is very lose) , Do not like the new craze of woman getting tats on arms like a guy ,but that is me and I'm totally in Love with myself and could not think of anybody else that I would want to spend my whole day with

?? where down there? unless she gets it directly on her "lips" then i don't see how a tattoo would affect anything. i personally don't have any tats down there. who is doing this tattoo? i would be more uncomfortable with you wife sitting there , legs spread w/ tattoo artists head in her crotch. lol yikes i just what it will be like for tattoo there to heal
