Depends how bad your doing, If you have anything below a B, I would take the pass grade. If your getting a A/B, you should get the letter grade and have it shown on your transcript.
If you asking for over all (like some universities only do pass/fail while others do letter grade), I would say letter grade b/c it's hard to get a job or when you get your masters with pass/fail b/c they can't see exactly how well you did versus they can see exactly how well you did based on letter grade.

I think that getting a grade for your class performance and the work you produce is essential to know how well you're absorb what you're being taught. Of course, that is contingent upon having a teacher who grades fairly, but you do need to know. No grades lets you know nothing until the end of the course cycle, when you might find yourself in trouble academically. Pass/Fail is as inadequate and useless for the obvious reasons.
I work in the dental laboratory industry, so I deal with dentists all day long. There are good dentists and there are dentists that are so inept that I wouldn't take my dog to them for treatment. There's a joke among the guys I work with ... 'Do you know what they call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his class in dental school?' Of course the answer is 'Doctor' ... but would you rather sit in his chair or the chair of the guy that was 1st in his class?
You don't get to ge first or last, better or worse, unless you get graded for what you accomplish in the classroom!

Sorry, I'm waaaaaayyyyyyy past school age but what is all this crap about no grades. Is it another of these "can't hurt anyones self esteem" bull crap ideas. Life is nothing but a competition to reach your intended goals, or don't we have goals anymore either? It's the same in kids sports, "let's not keep score, not being a winner, might hurt someones self esteem and cause undo harm to them." Wake up world!!!!!
How can you improve yourself if there is no way of knowing where you stand.

I always preferred letters. I think it's a good indicator of strengths and weaknesses. Pass/fail, O,S,U does nothing to let you know where you need improvement and when you do improve.
