It's there in your XP if you've updated it.

But, it's tough for you to operate it because it recognizes only New York American English Accents and will not work if you're from the East, which I think you are.

Just wait a few more years and it'll probably be able to account for all possible accents.

Third party softwares start from 199 $[USD].

there is a software from IBM which is called as IBM VOICE. with this u can speak on the mic and the words get typed.this is most effective in MS-word. the software size is almost 200 MB.i have it.but a small poblem is that it works real good if u have an american accent otherwise several times u have to repeat certain words like hungry etc .

Windows XP has an excellent speech recognition system built in. Additional capabilities can be added using the e-Speaking (website below) Voice and Speech Recognition software.

Look at the Microsoft summary on their website called: "How to install and configure speech recognition in Windows XP ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306537 ).

Dragon is the commerical voice recogintion software. Microst Word also has some voice recogintion features. Neither you can get for free.

You can try Express Scribe, http://www.nch.com.au/express/index.html. Remember, you will have to train the software to recognize your voice.
