The following is information from the (excellent) KUGB grading syllabus web-site, which gives a guide to every Shotokan karate grading step you will take. In fact, I wish there was a site like this for my style (Wado-ryu karate!) If you follow the links below, you will find Heian Sandan, the entire kata, in a slide-show and a video version - they are great!! Happy hunting, I hope that I have helped!

First off Merrily. If you're a 3rd degree black belt thanyou would know the gradig process. As you would need to be prficient in all Katas and techiniques in your art to even become a black belt, let alone a 3rd degree black belt. So to just say I hink or maybe.....
The requirments are the same for grading, or should be in all dojos but some will grade you as you train and others will have you actually test for them. For instance in Judo you will need to know 15 throws, 5 chokes, 5 arm locks and al 5 sets Nage No kata (throwing techniques) to get your brown belt. But your sensei will probably only ask you to do 4-5 throws 2-3 chokes 2-3 arm locks and maybe only 2 or 3 sets of kata. But sensei will call them out randomly and typically the more dificult ones. So you can't get away with only know half of it.
Check out the link below to see grading requirements that I found for Shotokan Karate.

It really depends on which school you are going to and what you will be tested on. You will probalby be tested on different self defense techniques as well as your kata.
Judoka, No not all schools have the same requirements, You should know that since you obviously know everything. I know the grading processes at the schools I’ve attended, should I list them? Will it help the poster? I don’t think so. The question is too specific to his school and he should know what he is being tested on specifically at HIS school. His instructor should have made it very clear on what he needs to know for his next belt requirements. And yes, I am a third degree black belt. Don’t really care if you believe me or not.
