According to DMV, you can drive in VA without insurance as long as you pay the Uninsured Motorist Fee of $500 a year. Has anyone tried doing this and if so, does this only cover you the driver or the car you are using? How does this work? Is it really legal?

You ask the strangest questions. If the Va. DMV (a state government agency) says it is so--then of course it is legal! If Vito the gangster said that then I would be suspicious. It's that simple.

Is it advisable? A reasonable person would naturally assume that the benefits of having insurance and paying a little more for it IS ALWAYS preferable to paying $500 a year for the privilege of NOT having insurance. Again, it's that simple.

Somehow you really need to think through things more dude.

Interesting. But I'm willing to bet that your car won't be covered in the event of an accident. I also wonder how the other person's car would be covered. I bet there's a LOT of fine print, and I think it'd still be more lucrative to purchase the base insurance (a la cheapest) for the car.
