There is federal law limiting what gifts you can give a postman (they are federal employees). You don't want to get him fired, so follow these guidelines from the USPS website. Pay special attention to the last exclusion (NO CASH):

Gifts to Postal Service Employees
While many Postal Service™ customers have traditionally thanked their letter carrier with gifts of cash during the holiday season, this practice puts our employees at risk of violating federal law. The Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch ("Standards"), specifies that Postal Service employees may not accept gifts from outside sources (including Postal Service customers) or gifts given to them because of their official positions. Postal Service employees are also prohibited from soliciting gifts from outside sources.

There are a number of exceptions and exclusions to the general gifts rule. Postal Service employees may accept the following items:

-Snacks and beverages that are not offered as part of a meal.
-Items with little intrinsic value (i.e., greeting cards, plaques, pens, coffee mugs, etc.).
-Perishable items (i.e., flowers, chocolates, cookies, etc.); if the items are clearly worth more than $20, employees should share them with others in the Postal Service workplace.
-Items with a market (retail) value of $20 or less.
-Gifts motivated solely because of a personal relationship.
-Gifts for which the employee has paid market (retail) value.
-Gifts paid for by the Postal Service.
-Postal Service employees may not accept cash - in any amount or form (bills, checks, money orders) - from an outside source.

You just reminded me of an old joke. When the mailman knocked on the door to deliver the mail, the lady of the house was waiting for him in her nightie, invited him to her bedroom where they had great sex. After it was over, she handed him a dollar. The mailman, a little confused, thanked her and asked her why? She replied: Oh, it was my husband's idea....When I asked him what to give you for Christmas he said; "Fu*k the mailman, give him a dollar!"

Mailmen do not get paid alot of money, they are employed by the federal government. Most people I know give the mailman cookies or some kind of treats for christmas, but I'm sure if you gave him a card with some money in it he wouldn't say no...

(I do believe the person above me has been a federal employee as well... they tell us all that stuff. Most people I know don't follow it 100%. Just my observation.)

I see our mailman delivering through sun, rain and snow. But he always has a smile on his face which also brightens my day whenever I meet him. I give him a greeting card with a "lil something" in it just before Christmas. They say you cannot put a price on a smile but no harm trying :)

If there is a law against that, too bad; they can sue me and I will sue them right back. There is no law against spreading Holiday cheer as far as I know.

Mailmen have to trudge through the ice, sleet, and snow (depending on where you live), but they also get paid a fair wage, and don't have to stay cooped inside of a cubicle all day.
Give your mailman some milk and cookies (or an ice cold coke, if you live in the south).
That, coupled with a hearty "HO HO HO" should make his day!
