to go along with the braces because he has an over bite. A friend tells me this is a scam to get an extra $1,000. Shouln't braces correct an overbite or should I pay for this jaw brace also?

Overbites can be due to several factors, but the most common are skeletal mismatch. This means that one of the jaws is too far back, too far forward, too wide, or too narrow. Braces with elastic activation can only do so much to move teeth. If some skeletal growth must be encouraged, then headgear, an expander, a palatal widener, etc. may be necessary. The only person qualified to make that decision is the orthodontist assessing your son. If you don't trust what he has recommended, get a second opinion, and possibly even a second price quote. Be cautious though. Never look for a bargain with parachutes or doctors. I hope this helps.

Depends on the situation. It is very possible that he will need something other than just braces sometimes surgery, sometimes a jaw brace.
Get a second opinion. I do believe it, personally I had braces for years starting out when I was only FIVE years old til I was 13.
During that time it never done anything it never corrected my overbite. So still had the overbite til I was 16 and got tired of the overbite and wanted my mouth corrected so I paid for everything myself and got it done.
The braces never done one thing for me during all of the years I had them because my foster mom didn't agree with any other options they suggested.
I never had any gaps between my teeth or any of that, just an overbite. In my case I had to get the surgery.

I had a bad overbite when I was younger but my teeth were straight. I originally got a palette expander to prepare for the braces, which they only gave me 6 braces on the top to try and close up the overbite. Well two years later, they look them off and then another two years down the road I got full braces, to help fix my overbite again...well this time, they pulled out my top two 12 yr old molars and then I had to wear rubber bands to help close the space in. Well, now I have straight teeth and no overbite! and I completely trusted everything my dentist and orthodontist did for me and my teeth!

Pay for the jaw brace now or orthognathic surgery later where they have to break his jaw. Braces just usually correct the tooth alignment but like in my daughter's case he could do nothing with her jaw alignment even after years of braces. She had jaw surgery and has a beautiful smile. I would have loved it if they could have corrected her smile without surgery.

Your freind is she a dental professional and you would believe a friend over a orthodontist. Before you do that have a second opinion done by a different orthodontist.

I had to wear "headgear" which is used to correct an overbite for almost a year before getting my actual braces put on and for a few months after I actually got my braces. The braces themselves are to straighten the teeth, they may correct a small overbite in the process but it takes other corrective gear to correct a pronounced overbite. Of course, you may still want a second opinion but I had to do both.

Hope this helps.

braces and the litlle rubber bands that go on them are only for fixing small over bites i think. it would b best to get ur son the braces and the other applience otherwise when he is older he may have to have surgury to correct his overbite. so the brace sounds like the best option. but if u feel that the dentist/orthodontist is wrong or is just trying 2 get money u could get another opinion

Get a second opinion. My daughter's dentist told me she needed braces when she was just 8 .. The orthodonstist works right out of the dentist's office every week and guess who gets a big fat commission?

Take your son to another orthodontist and see what they say.

By the way, my daughter who is now 11 has perfectly stright teeth due to nature, not an orthodontist and I still have my 2500 dollars in the bank!

My child just had a jaw widener brace inserted into her mouth, this an alternative to breaking her jaw and resetting it. Sometimes it is necessary to correct the bite alignment in addition to straightening the teeth as one affects the other.....

But this was an all inclusive pay one price thing, he new he was doing this prior to putting the braces on

It just didnt arrise mid treatment

it depends on the case of the overbite. I had a friend once, he tried braces, and inclined planes and non-of those worked. My advice is to ask for a second opinion, it wouldnt hurt to inquire. :)

You might want to check. My one price for the orthodontist covered everything from consultation to retainer after the braces. There were no extra charges, it was an all-inclusive price.
