You really must take your cat to the vet. The problem is most probably diet or the cat's teeth. However, without wanting to alarm you, bad breath can be a sign of failing kidney's. Only a vet can give you an accurate diagnosis.

At 16 years old your cat is probably has diabetes, especially if she is overweight. Hence the rotten breath. Ask your vet what you can do for her. If that isnt' the case, try brushing her teeth with a toothpaste especially for animals. Make sure she is eating only hard food as that also helps keep their mouths clean.

Have the vet look at the gums and teeth, both of which can cause bad breath. Other medical conditions that can cause bad breath: kidney disease/failure, diabetes, heart disease. Have you recently switched foods? Some cheap foods can cause bad breath.
Your best bet is to have the vet check her out for any medical reason why. At 16, you should not rule out medical conditions and they are treatable or manageable if diagnosed!

I dont mean to alarm you but bad breath in a cat is not a good sign, apart from tooth decay this is a prominate sign of lung cancer in cats. Take her to the vets as soon as you can

he/she needs a dental check at the vets if he has stinky rancid breath (could have a bad tooth or an abcess). certain cat biscuits can help teeth such as purina one and also some from the vets. Also meat flavoured tooth paste is available from the vet.

There are two possible reasons for the badbreath. One is your cat's diet. The other is that your cat may have decayed teeth--which is very common at that age.
Take your cat to your vet as soon as possible. He may suggest a change in diet. If there is a dental problem, the vet may need to remove some teeth and can also show you how to brush your cat's teeth (yes, there is a way to do that!).
Good luck!

At that age your cat probably has some tooth decay.
It would be best to take the cat to the vet for a check up. At 16 that might cause stress issues ...
If you feed the cat "wet" or canned food, try to reduce that or eliminate it.
Cats should have some dry crunchy food.
See if your cat will eat parsley or a little grass or other greens. You can get seeds to sprout and leave them in a dish for your cat.
I would also suggest that you allow your cat to fast one day a week (Saturday is a good day). That will allow his/her body a rest which is very good for cats.
best,
cez

do you feed her only cat food? That may help. I also give my Cat Purina Indoor Cat Food. But you need to be very careful about changing an older cat's diet! I'd jump on to the Purina Web site & see what you can find. Happy to hear your kitty has been around this long! :)

he most prob has bad teeth/gums, your vet might siggest a dental scale and polish which would help, but i would recomemd having a pre anaestectic blood test and have the cat on a drip throught the procedure as he is an old boy.
you can get food as well like t/d (hills which helps with teeth but he will prob need the dental first

That's pretty old for a cat!
It could be that she needs her teeth cleaned. A vet could help with that. Or, since she is so old, she could have tummy troubles.
I hope this helps.
