They are fascinated by religion and only survive on the attention from Christians and Jews. They like to pick fights to attempt to legitimize their world view. Misery loves company.
This is actually a complex wherein the person establishes a philosophical or (perceived) intellectual "high horse". With a little bit of stubbornness, they feel they must constantly defend their ground by berating and belittling those who don't subscribe to their particular world view. In fact, some of the fiercest fighting is in-fighting amongst other 'atheists'.
They just like the conflict. In short, they lift themselves up by dragging others down.
Humourously enough, they accuse Christians of all these atrocities in the name of our God. Yet they feel perfectly welcome and vindicated to be hateful, spiteful, and evil towards us. And all for what? Christianity is a big 'cult' whose big scandal, whose main M.O. is to make everyone love each other? And that's wrong because...?
Can't tell you how many emails I get because of Y.A. from atheists who want to pick a fight. It's boring and I delete them all without reading. I'm a former Collegiate National Debate Champion and I can't even stand to argue with them! Their logic is circular, their stand is pig-headedly unrelenting, and their motives are surreal and vacuous.
So, don't let them drag you down with them. They're psychological kryptonite.

Wow, what a refreshing question! Why has this never been asked before?
Atheism is not a religion, but there are many religions which do NOT revolve around any god. Please note that this is NOT the Christian Religion & Spirituality group.
For Spirituality, which does NOT imply theology. It's quite possible to be a spiritual atheist.
Atheism doesn't mean that someone has no knowledge of religion. Many atheists are extremely informed about their own former religion and many others as well. Many are quite qualified to answer questions here. This IS a Q&A site after all.
What else? Hmmm....it's also one of the most frequently populated groups, which means that there are more questions to answer. For answer junkies, it's a (pardon the expression) godsend.
And of course many DON'T hang around in R&S. They hang around in Society & Culture, and see questions from ALL of those categories.
Naturally there are those - from BOTH sides - who are irritated by their opposite numbers; who like to cause contention, etc.
For starters.

I don't think you really know what the word Atheist really means. In the 14th century or thereabout there was a religious order know as the theists. They believed in very strict adherence to the dogma and precepts of the times. Such as the celebration of Christmas as being a pagan holiday and therefore to be avoided. Flagellant behavior in atonement for the blood Christ shed and belief that every word in the bible, old and new testament was absolute and the word of God, not mans interpretation. The Theist's were for the most part an ancient version of the extreme right. Anyone who did not believe as they did were considered to be hieratic and not true believers. Anti-theist began to spring up as the dogma became more and more extreme. Over time the term anti-theist became shortened into Atheist, and the meaning has been perverted into someone who does not believe in God. This is wrong, Atheist do not believe in the common interpretation of God, or in the organized religion that has over time created a God of hatred, morbity, single mindedness, and absolute obedience. Giving no ground for thought or question. Most Atheist's are quite spiritual, in that they have faith in man, the creator of God, and in our abilities to rise above the need of a deity to grow and evolve.

surely, Atheists would be religious. An Atheist would not have faith in deities, yet Buddhism, Hinduism, and a few different religions evaluate Atheism to be valid, by using fact of their ideals. for example, there are no gods in Jainism, and specific Buddhists have faith that no gods exist, the two. those could be varieties of Atheism. i'm no longer an Atheist, i'm irreligious. None of it exists to me. I ought to additionally point out that many Christians here do the marvelous ingredient that the Atheists do; no longer one is extra useful than the different.

First - I should mention that ALL of the athiests don't stay around that category. It's just some. Next - maybe it's because they (those ones who hang around this Answers category) haven't learned that respect is a great virtue. I know it sounds cheesey - but once we are all practicing respect - the world will be a better place.

I don't. I like the whole Society and Culture section, plus Travel, Beauty and Style, Health and Sport.
Atheists are here because we have an opinion on Religion and Spirituality.

That's simple, they're on the outside looking in and deep inside they really want what to find out more about religions, be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc. In other words, they want to know why religious people have a more fulfilling life.

I like learning other people’s thoughts on such touchy subjects and like to give my input as well. I am willing to listen to you so long as you listen to me as well. Plus, every once in a while, you get a real crackpot to laugh at, but it is all in good fun.
