There are two basic books every cook should have - the Joy of Cooking, and the Betty Crocker Cookbook. You can get them at amazon or almost any bookstore. They take you through the basics of every common cooking technique, and have tons of easy recipes for all the basic foods.

Better Homes & Garden Cookbook, you can find them in Walmart. They've had them in a pink binder/book cover lately in support of Women's Breast Cancer. It's really great as it has cooking techniques, cooking terminology, & great recipes. I've been using mine for years!
Thank you, ShariP for sharing those recipes!

A good cookbook will be your best friend. You want a basic book, like Betty Crocker's Red book or BHG . They are the two I own and are very good basic books.I have been cooking since I was a kid and I still need to get mine out almost every time I cook. You will get detailed instructions to make any dish, helpful tips and pictures, something no one can do for you here. I like to go to thrift stores, like goodwill and get cookbooks there. You get old books with really interesting meal ideas, the kind of stuff your mom used to make! They're usually between $1 and $3. Look for books that say easy meals or quick and easy. Look for brand names like Kraft or Pillsbury. They usually have tons.

She explains everything from how to boil an egg to cooking an entire 3 course meal.
She also has books for christmas, fish, meat, puddings etc so once you've got the basics you could get the others.

Start with The Four Ingredient Cookbook. One version has low-fat recipes, as well.
