Popping is a good thing. If your ears don't pop, the pain is excruciating!
The air pressure in your middle ear is the same as the pressure around you when you're on the ground. Once you're on a plane, the pressure in the cabin decreases as the plane gains altitude, this means that the pressure in your ear becomes greater than the plane's cabin pressure. The only way out for the air in your ears is through the eustachion tube that empties into your throat. That poping you hear is the air forcing itself out thru this tube.
That said, drink LOTS of water or decaf anything, chew gum or suck on hard candy, yawn (on purpose, opens the tube) and use a nasal decongestant to thin mucus & make the tube clearer.

It is caused by the pressure difference of the ambient air and the cavity in your middle ear. Easily cleared by practicing the valsalva maneuver.
When rapid ambient pressure increase occurs as in diving or aircraft descent, this pressure tends to hold the Eustachian tubes closed, preventing pressure equalization across the ear drum, with painful results. To prevent this, divers, caisson workers and pilots ‘equalize’ pressure by swallowing, which tends to open the tubes. If this fails, then by blowing hard against closed lips and nose while swallowing. This is another application of the Valsalva maneuver.
Straining, blowing against resistance as in blowing up balloons has a Valsalva effect and the fall in blood pressure can result in dizziness and even fainting.
