I just moved to France and cant speak french yet, so most of the time yes.
Much easier to say 'pardon' or 'desole' than getting into an arguement with an angry frenchman.

Yes, i do! i guess it's part of me i say it all the time even if I'm not involved in whatever happened! it's just a way to show sympathy in some cases, guilt in other and humility as well in certain cases as answered previously by fobs_holy... .

No. I don't do anything I need to be sorry for, and if it happens by accident, well that makes it god's fault, or noone's fault, depending on how you look at it.

Not so much any more; I've nearly broken myself of that habit. I've begun working on breaking the habit of saying "thank you" for no good reason. People do it all the time on the phone; it's become a replacement for goodbye.

Sure - I think it's a natural human response - especially when someone has told you some bad news - for example if someone says they have to have surgery, a natural response would be "Oh, I'm so sorry".
