I think windows is more easy-to-use and more compatible with everything but linux is safer. The best solution is Mac OS.

Linux, it's faster more secure and it's open source.
Ubuntu (http://ubuntu.com) is a good linux to start with.
You can download it from their website or order CD:s for FREE (I ordered a couple days ago 10 CD:s).
