An avi file does not necessarily contain picture. Be sure that they do actually contain picture before you can be sure something is wrong.
If you are sure they do, then your computer can't handle the data rate required. Some avi's at the compression stage are told to prioritise audio - meaning the audio will play even if the picture can't due to too slow computer, or any other reason.

Yea I had this problem before. Download a latest AVI codec pack. They are available in download.com (or just google search for avi codec). Install and restart and you are good to go.

Also try to download a better codecs pack! beleive it or not but media player classic has all the codecs to play all files, try to get it from here: www.download.com

wmp dont have the right codecs to play the file, download divix player and they should work, i usually get a picture and no sound though

you may need to download codecs for WMP, these can be found from divX or you can search google for free codecs, it should not be too hard to find. Hope this helps
