My daughter started sucking her index finger when she was about 2yrs old. She picked it up from another kid at day care. I have tried the spicy and sour stuff you rub on the finger - she likes the taste. I have tried to use tape or band-aids she rips them off. I even go in when she is sleeping and try to take it out of her mouth, and she will pull and fight in her sleep. Her bottom teeth have started to become crooked. I want to break her of this...any ideas??

She LOVES tobasco sauce!
Anything spicy does not work.
Or sour! She loves strong flavors.

It is hard to break bad habits, especially when it goes on for a long time. This is not a good sign that your childs teeth have become crooked and she needs to stop this immediatly. If your daughter does this for attention then just ignore it and don't pay attention and she will grow bored of it, but if it isn't for attention then try putting a sock or mitten on her hand and tape it on,i heard this does work. Maybe you could put soap on her finger or find something that she doesn't like the taste of and put it on her finger. Try this website for other ideas.

She is 8 years old so the infant tricks with socks on the hands may not be to appealing to her. My son has a sucking issue as well he just likes things to be in the mouth, often his shirt colar or jacket. He is 7, what we do is give him sugar-free gum to keep his mouth busy. It seems like a constant habit and habits are hard to break for adults so dont expect an eight year old to do it too quick. Explain to her she should understand that it is a consern and try the gum thing it might help.
Good Luck

Well my sister used to have the same problem but finally my mother had enough of it. She took her to the doctor because her nails started to become discolored and her finger became discolored. So we went to the doctor and the doctor told her what would actually happen if she kept doing this bad habit. That scared her enough and she has not sucked her finger since.

Don't put too much presure on her just tell her that if she keeps on sucking her finger, the finger will cut off u might want to tell her about the germs that she could get and all the kind of diseases she could get if she keeps on sucking her finger.

The reason her bottom teeth have become crooked is because of GENETICS not sucking her thumb. I never had crooked teeth and I sucked my fingers. Please see the reference below...

when she is at home you could wrap her thumbs in bandaids. they wouldn't taste very good. and it would be a constant reminder to keep her fingers out of her mouth.
good luck.
