Someone on CNN said that if the lost climbers on Mt. Hood had a stove in their snow cave they could melt the snow to drink as water. But wouldn't eating snow have the same effect because it will melt in their mouth or at least their stomach, right???

Eating the snow is not the best idea for the lost climbers if they have a stove with them for 2 reasons.
Reason 1 is the snow has to melt in the stomach and warm up to a tolerable temperature to be metabolize which takes a lot of useful energy.
Reason 2 is by eating the snow it will lower the core temperature making them more susceptible to hypothermia.

Only as a last resort should snow be eaten for water intake when one does not have a heat source to warm by. Snow will deepen the chilling in the core of our bodies during raw exposure situations and fatally accelerate hypothermia.

Water is easier to consume, A person has to spend more energy from their body to eat snow. Also it will make you colder were as melted snow will have a warmer temperature.

Snow is cold and if you eat to much of it can be harmful to you, like with your blood pressure and such. Melting the snow to water will do nothing to you; unless a penguin peed on it!!! :) one foot of snow melted down is only equal to one inch of water.

It would take longer to consume an equal amount of snow (lets say 1 cup) than it would to drink 1 cup of water.

It takes a lot of energy to warm up snow. In cold conditions where there is a risk of hypothermia it is not advisable to eat snow.
