Religion arose when prehistoric man, always on the edge of starvation, hoped for some sort of divine intervention to help get dinner. This was not unreasonable, since there was no understanding of how things really work, and if the possible consequence of not palliating the gods is to starve to death, you are going to try to palliate the gods. Of course, nowadays this is no longer necessary; we know how the world (and most of the universe) works, and religion, except for its utility as a warm fuzzy blanket, is obsolete.

You're kidding right? When man first became aware of his surroundings he was not intelligent or educated enough to explain things. Nature phenomena was attributed to gods doing it. As civilization became more advanced some civilizations thought maybe one god could do it all. Now man is intelligent and educated enough to explain their surroundings we don't need the myth if God or gods anymore.
