You know I have asked myself that question. I'm not sure. Some people seem to fall in and out of it. Corinthians in the Bible seems (paraphrasing) to say love is long lasting, does not boast of itself, is forgiving, etc. I feel a strong emotional tie to my children and would be willing to give my life for one of them. I respect my parents but we never particularly liked one another. Then there is infatuation or lust. I think all of things get labeled "love" at one time or another. I think for human beings, love would involve some type of emotional attachment. You can be emotionally attached to your country and feel pride when you see your country's flag. I think most Christians fear and respect their god. So now we have: some type of emotion; fear; respect; attachment; pride; lust; infatuation. I gues it can be any and all of those things.

Love is never having to say you're sorry. It's true, if you love someone you never disrespect them enough to do anything you need to be sorry about. Same with your country, follow the laws so you never have to say you are sorry you comitted a crime. Act as to make God proud of your behavior, you will never have to say you're sorry for your mistakes. Philosophical sayings make sense only if you dig into the meaning deeper than surface level.
