I think it's about their moral values. A good person doesn't just suddenly become corrupt they have to be missing some important values to begin with.

spud55 must come from some real trailer park trash. the feeling of power is a temporary feeling that you get over very quickly. don't talk like you know something cause you know some cops. you'll never understand until you become one. Most cops come on this job to help people and that's a fact.

Power and authority. Most cops don't really become cops because they want to help people. They like the notoriety, the way people start behaving themselves when they see a cop, the feeling of domination over the general public. I have an acquaintance who is a retired psychiatrist (I worked with his wife) and as part of his practice he counseled a lot of police officers. He said that invariably, they would tell him they became cops to help people but when they got into their issues it wasn't about helping people at all. It was about the power and the adrenaline rush. Once they have the power, they begin to exercise it in ways to make themselves feel better or, as was the case in the 70's in a lot of departments, to make their bank accounts better. New York and Denver were two of the worse cities for the cops being "on the pad", in other words making businesses pay for police protection. And if they didn't pay, the business would often need protection FROM the police.

Police are no different than any other people in this world. They get a feeling of POWER and they lose their heads. We read in the BIBLE that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of GOD." I have several friends, former students, and even relatives that are police officers. ALL police are NOT CORRUPT... SOME are. Have a great holiday. Find the time to begin a BIBLE STUDY this holiday season.

The dishonest and corrupt ones are corrupted by their power and authority over some individuals in certain circumstances. However, those officers are a small minority and cause all of the honesty police officers to be suspect!

The corrupt one most likely were that way , way before they joined the police dept. They just fell through the cracks when they were background checked and psychologically tested prior to entering the police academy.

Low pay, temptation and lack of ethics. Pretty much the same thing that causes you to do something like shoplift, drive 20 miles above the limit and try to walk out of a restaraunt withourt paying the bill.
Well...not "you' specifically but you get the drift right?

Human instinct. There are bad doctors, teachers, social workers, garbage men, etc. Every profession has a percentage of bad people associated with the job. It's just life. They were bad people before they became cops. They just got caught after they joined law enforcement.

Greed, low self-esteem, the need for power, something to help out with their egos, now that I have a badge and can carry a gun, I'm the boss type of personality. Very needy people!
