I know there are pleanty of good, honest questions here, but it does seem as if quite a lot of people are useing it just to insult and question other people's beliefs. why?
I mean, it does seem a lot more numerious in this category than any other. Anyone agree?

I'm getting a lot of great answers here, gut a couple seem to misinterpret my question. I'm not just talking about a single belief, such as Christians or Muslims, I am talking about ALL beliefs, including those such as Jewish and atheism (atheism may not be a religion, but is still a belief).

Mocking and insulting is wrong, but questioning is good. People need to thoroughly question their beliefs regularly.
As for me, I only insult people who ask stupid questions that offend or annoy me. I know insulting isn't going to convert anyone, but I don't want them to convert. I want them to accept me and quit thinking they have "THE TRUTH".

Sweetie,

Where attention goes, power flows.

What you focus on becomes more real, more immediate for you, and what you don't focus on becomes part of the background.

Concentrate on the questions that are asking for information, if the others bother you.

I also think that this has a lot to do with when you are here - I've only been here a short time, but have noticed that there are times when most of the questions seem to be genuinely after information, and other time when they are mostly rude and insulting.

BTW, one of the things that's interesting here is that it is a testimony to selective experience - you'll see questions like 'Why is it only ________ who get picked on here?"a lot.

Of course, thinking that only one group gets "picked on" requires very selective reading. I regularly see rude and insulting questions about Hinduism and Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, atheism, and so on. I have no idea what the percentages are, but each group seems to feel that they get more than their share of it. And, really, the only way to make an actual case for the "persecution" of any religion here would be to take a number of BIG and random samplings, and then figure the number of rude and insulting questions as a percentage of all questions asked pertaining to that religion. And then, of course, we have the problem of who decides what is a rude and insulting question. Who's going to be impartial about it?

***

So I guess what I'm getting at here is that while what goes on here is something you have no control over, you do have control over what you choose to read and how you choose to react to it.

If you're like most people, that will vary from day to day.

Cheers!

I think that some people are insulting our beilefs because they are afraid of actually believing them, and insult them to make themselves feel better about it, while others are just sad and have no time on their hands, and think they're funny and would rather be seen by others as a 'joker'. Or some people may be racist, for example hating a muslim, and by asking a stupid question using false information about Islam, they think they would make other people dislike Islam also.

To be honest, I don't really understand these people myself. Wow i wrote a lot for such a simple question. They are just REALLY sad. I don't mind people who genuinely want to know something and ask a question, but some people deliberately use the question to insult.

Edit: By the way im not just talking about muslims, I was just using an example.

I totally agree on all accounts. There are a bunch of jerks out there, and a lot of sincere questions. We have to purpose in our heart when we come here whether or not we're going to be an adviser or a scoffer and ignore the opposition no matter which side we decide to stand on. Why we do it, I cannot say, but I do try to ferret out the sincerity, for though I'm not the smartest, holiest person around, I try to help where I can. I will take a stand against some of the "jerk" questions here where I feel like I can make at least a quasi-intelligent defense, but I'm not here to start anything nor shove anything down anyones throat. I'm here only to present a point of view based on what I believe to be an intelligent, proper interpretation of God's word.

There is too much respect for religious beliefs in our society. I disagree with questions which are solely for the purpose of offending - and I agree you see several a day but maybe people just need an outlet since religion is forced down their throats and society and the media doesnt offer a counterpoint.

I'm not religious but I asked a question about Judas to get some religious perspectives on a matter I found interesting after watching the passion of the christ.

It says in the Koran that people who cannot be converted to Islam should be killed. I'm not sure they respect my lack of beliefs so I find it outrageous that the current body politic thinks it natural for me to go out of my way to avoid upsetting these sensitive people.

This site along with the GLBT site are hit on a regular basis and some of it stems from the religious folks slamming the gay and lesbian crowd and vice versa, then add in a mix of youngsters and the fires really get burning.
People from around the world visit and post on yahoo and some feel their religion is the right one etc. more fuel is added.
Many wrongs DON'T make a right. Agree to disagree and overlook the insults-be the bigger person so to speak. AND DON'T ADD MORE FUEL TO THE FIRES!
We all have our place in the world and there are bigger issues that we all must deal with right now instead of bickering back and forth.

I agree with you 100%. What you have to understand is that the people that answer some of the question on religion, have an ax to grind, they are angry people, and this way they can insult who they want, without having to be seem. Take it like it is just an ignorant person that has nothing good to say, and that is all.

i totally agree with you and its not because people believe their faith is the right one but they come up with questuions to make others look bad and for some reason people on this site just go ahead and believe the statement, for example someone asked if Muslims only give to muslim charities, suddenly all the answers say do they?? i didnt know that!! its got nothing to do with a persons own faith its just away to make others look bad and in some cases people are making their own faith look bad by insulting others. People are setting up fake user ids and coming up with stupid questions like 'you infidels will go to hell' just to stir up hatred against Muslims,
there isnt anything on here that is posted by someone that actually wants to learn something about a different religion but just insults for other religions.

Because people believe very passionately about religion and spirituality! Either strongly for or against. Those people who claim that god is their rock or muslims are fantastic are only being as passionate as those who don't have any religion of their own.
I am unable to understand how anyone could feel like they do about any god, church or other belief structure as i feel all that what is good about me is generated from within myself and my family.

I agree with you completely. I posted a question on here to get a little feedback from a person with religious knowledge, and instead i was belittled and judged for asking that question. My thoughts on the situation are that if they do not agree with my question just leave it alone. If you're only interested in the points then just post "who knows?" or "i don't care what you tell her" or something.. you don't have to belittle me or tell me how i sicken you or anything else.
