shaun, there is no easy answer to this question... you have to learn to fight in a manner that best suits your physical stature, and abilities. Shortcut moves like striking the throat or detesticulating some guy are ok in a pinch, but if he is good, he will block you then proceed to try to kick your tail. Then, you had better be tough enough for a real fight.

Track and feild... Specifically sprinting...
Seriously though. Training in an art is about mental and physical balance and strength. Yes it will give you knowlage and some good tools for self defence but as already stated opponents on the street aren't using the same techniques so they won't be fighting fare. As far as preventing an *** kicking. That's easy avoid the fight all together. If you get backed into a corner, he isn't going to give you time to get into a stance and certainly not have the time to throw a big round house. If all you want if fight training go to a boxing club.
But to echo in a not so silly way, what ninedemond said. If you are in this for beating people up. You'll never learn and if you act like that in a dojo you'll get tossed out on your ear. Or get your assed handed to you by a higher ranked fighter.
If you are in a situation where youare being bullied, just training in a martial art for a few weeks is not going to help you too much. It might give you more confidence but it might be a false sence of security however. If the other guy is stronger, bigger, and can fight a bit he just might fight harder and hurt you more.

Martial arts were start as a way of military combat and killing period. They have almost all been watered down over the years.
When you are looking for a martial art school, look for one where the instructor seems to actually care about you and not just the money he will make off you. You want one who cares about your progress and how well you can apply the techniques you are learning.
Just because you know martial arts doesn't mean you can't get your butt kicked. Joe Blow can always get a lucky sucker punch in. Martial arts just increase your chances by quite a bit.
When you are looking for what martial art to take, make sure it has everything that you want. I have blackbelts and even my Master certification in Taekwondo, however I teach a style called Wonjutsu. The reason I am teaching this style instead of Taekwondo is that it involves kicks and punches like Taekwondo, but also pressure points, touch knockouts, ground fighting, disarming attackers and you name it. It is a true mixed martial art. So make sure you find a style you are going to not only enjoy, but will offer everything you want. In a nutshell, find a good mixed martial arts school.
Bruce Lee would have been great in any martial art style and he basically started mixed martial arts with his style, but it basically comes down to you as the fighter. Some people have it and some don't. Most people can learn it and use it effectively as long as they find a good style and instructor.
Take care and good luck in your quest. Remember some quests are easy and some are not. You make it what you want.
If you would like to know some good schools in your area, drop me a email and I can help you find a good one. I have many connections and friends in the martial arts world.

Shaun... You will never be a good fighter no matter what you do. You try too hard to look for a shortcut and easy way in everything. You perfer to feed yourself false information instead of open your eyes and see the reality.
You simply want to learn a style that will make you look cool in a fight, like what you see in movie. Sorry to bust your bubble, but street fight will NEVER look like what you see in movies. It's always ugly, dirty, and messy!

i think the best art would be the one that teaches you how to first avoid fighting when a street fighter approaches you.
something about this question tells me this is a fight over nothing more than the ego if it were to happen.
