The tree is a newer artificial one, and our "Shadow" absolutely loves climbing in it. The problem is he's destroying the tree-literally! We haven't even been able to put ornaments on it yet; we have twice had to restring the 700 lights that are on it, as well. I'm looking for something that won't hurt our kitty or our kiddies (we have 5) and also won't damage the tree, lights, or ornaments. I hope somebody has some quick and effective answers. Thank you!

Haha.. Welcome to my world! I have 5 that scaled up and down my live tree daily. A little of anything that has a strong, offensive-to-cats odor at the base of the tree will keep them away. I took a sheet of aluminum foil and place it under the tree skirt, rubbed a bit of a lemon half (the skin side) on the bark at the base of the tree and they have avoided it like the plague ever since. Hope his helps you have a purrfect Christmas!

Take a spray bottle fill with water add cap full or table spoon of applecider vinegar. Every time it goes near the tree give him a good spray.
They don't like the taste when they lick it off their fur. It worked for me. And it wont hurt them or your tree. I've trained lots of cats with just plain water too. With a firm No!
Merry xmas and good luck.

We use a rolled up newspaper and spank our cats nose when she bothers the tree. It's working very good. Also try a spray bottle of water and spray it's face.

if you have tinsel on the tree, he might be trying to get at the tinsel to try and eat it. my mom says her cat used to do the same thing. its shiny and moving, thats what attracts them.

you could try a pet store and get some of the spray that supposedly keeps them off... or you can beat them everytime they get neat it.... or lock the cat p whenever you can't watch it

A mouse trap works wonders. It will not hurt them. It will startle them. They will avoid it.
