I lost a lot of mine due to moving over the years. I've been going through cookbooks, but they're not the same as the old-fashioned cookies we used to make.

Stink- If you can remember exact measurements for something you do once a year, you're better than me.

I picked up a re-print of the Betty Crocker Cookbook from 1950. It wouldn't be Christmas without these!

Russian Tea Cakes

Mix together thoroughly
1 cup butter
1/2 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift together and stir in
2 1/4 cup sifted gold medal flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix in
3/4 cup finely chopped nuts

Chill dough. Roll into 1" balls. Place 2 1/2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until set, but now brown. While still warm, roll in confectioners' sugar. Cool. Roll in sugar again.

Temperature: 400 Degrees
Bake 10 to 12 minutes
Makes about 4 dozen 1 1/2" cookies

Notes from me: add red and green sugar to the powdered sugar. Modern flour does not need sifting, and confectioners sugar only needs sifting if it's been open for a while. This dough seems crumbly, but press it together and it will form a ball. Don't chill it too long.

Christmas Stars Recipe

Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
2 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons strawberry jam
1/4 cup green decorator sugar (optional)

Directions:

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir flour mixture into the butter mixture until well blended. Refrigerate dough for three hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease several cookie sheets.
On a floured surface, roll out 1/2 of the dough at a time to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut dough into star shapes using a 3 to 4 inch star cookie cutter. Using a 1 to 2 inch star cookie cutter, cut a star into the center of half of the big stars. Sprinkle colored sugar on the cookies with the center cut out if desired. Put onto prepared cookie sheets about 1 inch apart, and bake for 6 to 8 minutes.
After cookies cool completely, spread 1 teaspoon of preserves in the center of each cookie that does not have a star cut out in the middle. Place a cookie with a cut-out on top of the layer of preserves. Pack cookies in a covered tin to preserve freshness.

Try looking up a recipe for Mexican wedding cookies or Hershey's Fudgey No-Bake Treats They're really easy to make and so far they have always been a great hit during the holidays. Honestly though the Fudgey No-Bake Treats aren't very attractive but they are healthy for you and they taste wonderful. Both cookies are addictive too. Good luck and Happy Holidays.
