what keeps the eggs from hatching? If we didn't package them up would they have hatched?

They have not yet been fertilized and the cold would keep them from hatching if they had been.

not fertilized in the case of most large eggs producing operations, farm raised eggs could be fertilized. the main reason is that the eggs are not kept warm enough to incubate

In order for eggs to hatch, they need to be fertilised by a rooster. Hens do not need roosters to lay eggs.

not fertilized is one reason. or they are also taken from the mom after hatching so she can't sit on them and they are then put in refrigerator where they can't begin to form.

Place some freshly pick eggs whit straw in a handmade basket cover them up whit a cloth and keep them in a warm atmosphere. turn them around every day, and wait an see.
