Rat Terriers crave human companionship and attention. They are unusually sensitive, intuitive, anxious to please, very determined and thrive on praise. Rat Terriers make good housedogs and can be crate trained, but don't generally do well in kennels. They love people and enjoy companionship too much. Just move and they're there like a shadow! Most dogs' think they are human, Rat Terriers KNOW that they are! Whether you're active, or a "couch potato", most will adapt to about any lifestyle that you may lead.
Fox Terrier probably developed from a rough-coated black and tan working terrier common to Wales and Durham and Derbyshire in England. However, huntsmen wanted a dog that they could distinguish from the fox as they dug into the den where the critter was cornered by the dog, so they cross bred with the Smooth Fox Terrier to fix the predominantly white color. This cross breeding is no longer done, and the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers are different breeds with different standards.

they are two different breeds. fox terrier is reconized by the AKC and the rat terrier is not. (i dont know about the toy fox) they resemble each other very much. they have pretty much the same temperment- i think rat terriers are easier to train and handle. but i would say they are both good. they usually always need something to do- they are very active. watch out if you have them in the house they CAN and probably WILL rip up everything. its just a natural behavior for that type of breed. also, take them to obedience asap! that will help. they are more fun (at least i think) when they are trained and they are very good dogs to teach for tricks!! good luck! hope this helps

Fox Terriers are about 20-25 lbs. and rat terriers are about 12 lbs. Fox terriers are unique in that they "smile" when you come to see them from being away for a period of time. Very nice dogs, usually with a white, black and brown coat. I believe they can both be "lap" dogs and they're of the hunting breed.

What they were breed to do is different and their body builds are quite a bit different as well. I have a rat terrier and I hate it I wouldn't recommend getting one. When you have a small dog sometimes they have weak blatters and the pea all over the place.
