i know this post is about 8 years old but i used a good steth and can hear as clear as a whistle in the 8th- 9th week. normally after day 52 as they are beginning to grow rapidly. if you still cant hear anything then just look out for the kicks in the last week. all my girls have had noticeable movement in the last week, it gains and then slowly subsides (but does not disappear) the day before whelp. Some, if not all, will come out with a great set of lungs and active.
Don't rely on beats to determine if she is in pup. rely on a good old fashioned sheep scanning professional or x-ray. one of my girls was scanned for 4 healthy,, then noticed 2 high in her ribs. these were not in the horns as they should have been. She ended up absorbing these late in the pregnancy which resulted in an emergency c sec at day 56, i was prepared for this due to the scan and also requested a spay at the same time as i would never breed again from her again. She was one girl who dropped her eggs at different times in standing heat. Her first litter resulted in 2 preemies and 5 full term pups. All survived with 24 hour care for the 2 tiny boys. The same thing would have happened again here if she had gone all the way. only 2 survived this time round. By the way, just to add, one of the 2 preemie boys went on to become an international champion and the other is a P.A.T.

I have a smaller female and I borrowed a hospital grade stethoscope and I can hear (at least) 2 puppies though it has only been 4 weeks. One thing I noticed is that I had to listen really low (closer to her female parts) to hear it. I guess they have not moved up into where I would presume the womb should be. I hope that helps a bit.

some breeders say they can..they also say they can tell you how many boy puppies and girl puppies there is by the sound. Well let me tell you I tried it. My dog was about ready to have her puppies and i got my stethoscope out. I didn't hear a thing lol.. I guess some breeders have better hearing than I do. All I got out of it was my dog looking at me as if to say What prey tell are you doing to me now? To tell you the truth some breeders say they can hear. I couldn't hear anything.

You can but it's very hard. because a dogs hearts beats fast depending on size you have to know what listening to is it the bitches heart or the pups hearts but my advise is to not bother you'll won't get to hear them.
