Birth asphyxia is not a brain disease but right after delivery of the baby, the baby should cry, which is the first sign that the child is breathing on its own,if there is a delay in the birth cry,the brain does not get the required oxygen which causes brain damage for the child, this condition is called as birth asphyxia.

Birth asphyxia leads to brain damage, due to the brain being deprived of oxygen immediately after birth. Hypsarrhythmia is a kind of pattern seen on EEG, in a child with infantile spasms. If the child has infantile spasms due to birth asphyxia, he must be severely brain damaged. The drug you asked about earlier, vigabatrine is a newer anticonvulsant, used to control fits in patients who are not controlled by other, more frequently used drugs. This child will most probably be severely mentally retarded.

i understand what u mean to say birth asphyxia is definitely a crippling disorder and will manifest later on as spasticity , mental retardation etc. Best treatment is oxygen therapy and observation.
